Watercolor paint (dry half pans not wet tubes)- your choice, but I will list some of my favorite brands in the suggested sections.

  • Watercolor brushes (standard pack of 5 or more)-synthetic or animal hair. Again, your choice. I’ll list some of my favorites below.

  • Water cup

  • Clean sponge

  • Rag or paper towels to dry your brushes

  • 8.5x11” 140 lb cold press paper and 8.5x11” 300 lb hot press paper. At least two sheets of each. You can get these as individual sheets or in a book of several sheets.

  • Leaves! Bring real leaves or photos of leaves. Real is preferable but you’ll have to get them the morning of or else they might wither.

Optional:

  • Set of colored pencils for fine detail overlay

  • Pigma Micron 08, 02, and/or 005 for fine detailing

Suggested brands:

Paint-I love Sennelier watercolors. I have a set of 12 half-pans. Another great and slightly more affordable brand is the Winsor & Newton Cotman series (set of 8 or more) half pans. Daniel Smith is also great. I don’t recommend some of the cheaper paint sets, not because I’m snobby, but because the quality of paint really does affect the range of color you can achieve in your painting as well as the behavior of the paint itself. It is worth spending a little more for quality paint, your artwork will thank you for it! That said, buy within your means. It is possible to paint incredible artwork with any kind of paint, low quality or high!

Brushes-In the art world, Sable hair brushes are usually the highest rated. They are also by far the most expensive. Synthetic hair brushes are more affordable and vegan if that’s your thing! There are a lot of different brands out there so I’m going to say you choose what speaks to you. Just make sure your pack has one or two round brushes of different sizes. You want at least one small round brush with a very pointy tip and a midsized one as well.
