Gouache Skulls Painting Class @ Nevada Fine Arts

  • Nevada Fine Arts 1301 South Virginia Street Reno, NV, 89502 United States (map)

Gouache is am extremely satisfying medium to paint with. Similar to watercolor, it can be applied in layers and mixed with water to add translucence, but it moves with a buttery consistency and finishes with a matte opacity that cannot be replicated with a watercolor paint. Join me at Nevada Fine Arts on December 18th to learn how to paint with gouache and apply our new techniques to a study of skulls! Skulls and bones will be provided but if you have your own, feel free to bring them with you! See below for a list of required materials that can be purchased at Nevada Fine Arts! Click HERE to reserve your spot!

Materials Needed:

  • Gouache tubes: Required- Primary Red, Primary Yellow, Primary Blue, Black, White, Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna.

  • Watercolor brushes (standard pack of 5 or more)-synthetic or animal hair. Again, your choice. I’ll list some of my favorites below.

  • Water cup

  • Rag or paper towels to dry your brushes

  • 8.5x11” Bristol Board

Suggested brands/colors:

Paint-I use Winsor & Newton designer’s gouache, but any brand will probably do just fine!

Colors- This is what I have in my kit but any set will do! Alizarin Crimson, Primary Red, Primary Yellow, Raw Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Sap Green, Olive Green, Ultramarine, Indigo, Cadmium yellow deep, Light Purple, Permanent White, Zinc White.
Brushes-In the art world, Sable hair brushes are usually the highest rated. They are also by far the most expensive. Synthetic hair brushes are more affordable and vegan if that’s your thing! There are a lot of different brands out there so I’m going to say you choose what speaks to you. Just make sure your pack has one or two round brushes of different sizes. You want at least one small round brush with a very pointy tip and a midsized one as well.
